Dear Dr. Kamal,

I am delighted to hear that your organization is planning to celebrate the creation of quantum mechanics fifty years ago. The creation of this set of ideas was one of the greatest achievements of the human mind without any doubt. It, of course, did not come in complete isolation. The creation of quantum mechanics was the result of a deep understanding of experimental facts and their inconsistencies with the older theories on one hand and an equally deep awareness of mathematics on the other.

Today, we are faced, in physics and other sciences, with equally challenging problems and what is needed once again are the two ingredients I have mentioned above. I do hope that the younger generation of physicists in Pakistan devote themselves with equal zeal to meeting these new challenges and produce as great asset of ideas as those that went into the creation of quantum mechanics. In this regard, one may remark that quantum mechanics was created at a time of great restlessness and economic depression in Germany and Europe. The need is always for the human spirit to rise above these impediments and to seek after the heart of things.

With kindest regards,
