BLUUUURT BLUUURRRTTTT!!!!! When are Blurt's golden oldies going to be released on CD??? Blurt's self titled lp released in 82 is propably their best and craziest lp ever recorded and definately deserves a release.Ted's babbling, blurty vocals and sax are at their craziest(along with the drumming and guitar playing)...dont beleave me? Just listen to tracks Play the Game,Trees,Physical Fitness, etc, and you'll know what I mean. Also deserving a release is their debut,In Berlin,Poppycock,Smoketime, and others. Im 39 and still enjoying those lps from Blurt to this very day on home-made cd-r recordings, but would like to find them on cds!!!!domenic, domenicr@vaxxine.com

I picked up IN BERLIN in 1981 when I moved to NYC from Florida...the live version of "My Mother Was a Friend of an Enemy of the People" is still my favorite bit of Blurtage. I subsequently picked up a number of their records, though by no means all, and they remain on my regular playlist. Blurt is, I guess, one of those bands which is so "British" (as well as "arty") that they're doomed never to be got by Americans--on the whole. Too bad! Blurt stands as one of the greatest of the bands which emerged in post-punk times, and I am pleased Ted Milton and crew are still carrying on...although I do wish more current output were available, and all old catalog released on cd! Anyway, cheers!Robert, Robert101455@yahoo.com

Hello Ted, this is Jochen from Cologne/Bonn. I'm performing solo gigs under the name Hinterlandt. It's got references to pop music as much as experimental stuff. Live I'm playing effect guitar, trumpet, vocals, electronics, other stuff. I'm very interested in playing support for Blurt if possible... saw you in Hannover ages ago and was deeply impressed. I approached Frank from Bett Club in Frankfurt (played there before) and he says he's going to ask you. There's two other gigs that I'd love to play with you: Rotterdam (Worm) and Amsterdam (OCCI, I played there last year and loved it). Do you think there's any chance of doing this? I need very little money (50 euros or so) and am really easy to handle:) Please let me know what you think. There's heaps of info at www.hinterlandt.com Thanks+cheers JochenJochen / Hinterlandt, jochen@hinterlandt.com

Hello Saw Mr Pugh as support at a few gigs back in the late 70s ... quite a show! Only later did I realise that there was a Blurt connection. While browsing the Web, came across a reference to a play put on at the Bush, London in 1976 - Operation Wordsworth by Mr Pugh's Velvet Glove ... any connection to Ted? If so, is the play still available in any form? I'd be very interested if there is a connection.Anthony , anthony@neu1.freeserve.co.uk

MR PUGH WANTS TO PLAY Ted Milton: this man is barking sane. Puppeteers of the world unite, Don't make love, make war. Puppeteer: a song by Blurt Mr Pugh we salute your obscenity and verve. Mr Pugh wanted to return theatre to its roots. Mr Pugh wanted to lay a turd at your kid's birthday party. More years ago than I'd care to remember, I'd see as support at various gigs here and there, an act going by the name of Mr Pugh - a Punch and Judy show with a difference. This one entailed more expletives than your average Lenny Bruce performance, the spilling of bodily fluids and some maximum violence. It wasn't for the kids. If you can imagine a Punch and Judy show mounted by Alfred Jarry, you'd be close - Papa Ubu goes panto. The crowds would usually let their displeasure show after ten minutes or so - but by then, the mad puppeteer had done his job. Time passed and in the salad days of 1980 I got interested in a wayward band called Blurt - an interest spurred by the name of their first single - 'My Mother Was An Enemy Of The People'. Buying it to find a free jazz/punk type collision bursting out of an innocent looking 7" was a joy. Shortly, reading their press, it hit me that the leader, one Ted Milton - the singer and saxophonist, was the very maniac behind Mr Pugh. This man Milton has been around the tracks. Poet, lyricist, player of wild sax and a performer of singular genius. He's been touring and recording with Blurt and solo for some quarter of a century now and shows no sign of letting up, in addition to collaborating with like-minded musicians and giving poetry recitals (as far back as the early sixties) and getting involved with multi-media events. You'll find his work in the famous 1969 anthology 'Children of Albion.' He dragged Mr Pugh's Blue Show, to give it its full nomenclature, around for fifteen years or so as an affront to the civilized sensibilities of the liberal theatre-goers of Europe before calling it a day, tired of the prissiness and smugness of the audiences. Mr Pugh had looked them in the eyes and found them wanting. He seems to have approached it as a fight to the death. One audience, having sniggered through the violence, sexual content and dirty words, apparently balked at the sight of a Union Jack being regurgitated. One can only assume they were unaware of the event's carnival, Antic roots. Chalk one up to the poet Milton. Blurt has had a floating membership over the years, but all incarnations have in common a very disciplined post-punk sonic attack over which Milton lets loose with an atonal, abandoned (his description) squall of noise from his sax and a lyrical approach more Dada than pop. As Zappa once said of John Cooper Clarke, the man has exquisite diction. Having studied book-binding, he also creates marvelous little hand-made volumes of Beat Dada madness. Blurt are still patrolling the margins - the audiences have never been huge and he remains a prophet without honour at home but there are still people out there interested in tracking down the mavericks. Every now and again Mr Pugh peeps out from the linaments of the Milton physog. And he came from Stroud, you know. http://malignfiesta.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_malignfiesta_archive.html

Blurt: Rhythm Factory, Whitechapel, 13.4.06 Sticking to the classic Blurt template, Ted Milton on sax and vocals, backed with guitar and drums, live the band lack nothing in the way of noise and attack. I've seen bands twice the size unable to whip up such a storm. The secret to Blurt, something many performers should take on board, is the discipline and precision of the execution - Blurt songs tend to cut out the flab, creating hard but concise structures and giving Mr Milton the necessary space to go mad. Think of a fusion between Ornette Coleman and Kurt Schwitters and you would be close. Freebop Merz, anyone? Sporting a natty white zoot suit and two-tone shoes, Mr Milton cuts quite a figure on stage - there's a pleasingly theatrical but threatening edge to his persona ... stalking the stage, taking the occasional nip from a half bottle of whisky, he gives the impression of a man you wouldn't want to cross. There is a suggestion of barely suppressed violence bubbling away inside the Milton skull - he's ready to blow up at any time. The band ran through a good mix of Blurt material, none of which sounds like anything else on the market - in a musical landscape dominated by the anodyne and the anaemic, this band are to be cherished. Milton coped with monitor problems with good humour and multi-lingual sarcasm, and demonstrated his very particular vocal and saxophone techniques. What more do you want? The gig was , in part, a promotion for the release of the new CD, 'The Best Of Blurt, vol.2 - The Body That They Built To Fit The Car' - not only does it contain 16 tracks of prime Blurt, you'll also find a couple of wonderful videos - everybody should run out and buy a copy. In fact buy two copies and give one to a friend. http://malignfiesta.blogspot.com/2006/04/blurt.html

Bark against the luck Punk jazz: Blurt Ted Milton is not, which trachtet to give a nice day to its public. With its group Blurt it files for 26 years at a music between archaischer force and hintergruendigem Schalk. Well possible that the master of the Free jazz Punks is to be seen for the last time on the stage. If Ted Milton sings, then sounds like a barking of a dog keep-drawn. If Ted Milton Saxofon plays, like a complaining death geweihten wild pig. From it Ted Milton a friendly contemporary is apart. Even if he occasionally things says how: "I cannot sit in a theatre, without having the feeling, I must there immediately again raus - and with the Rausgehen something damage". Or: "I believe that everyone, which the life forces to make art or arise, in principle ill, mostly unfortunate and generally moved is." Its verruecktheit and his slope to Animali rave Ted Milton in its volumes Blurt out. For more than 26 years. With modest success, but also equal lasting Inbrunst and Radikalitaet. Ted Milton is now already over 60 years old, why he calls his current tour his the latter and places its parting from the stage in prospect. He did that already more frequently before this last tour, but in the reason he tends to arrange all its concerts in such a way, as would apply it thereby an ultimative exclamation mark into the world to set. Nonsense and pure Ernst To describe Ted Miltons music there were efforts in the last 26 years some. Times one came on Dada avant-garde jazz, times on Punk Fake Pogo jazz, the Englishmen called it simply Afro Punk, and to all it concerned to express the irritating coexistence of archaischem Furor and inclined Schalk in Blurts music. Song title like "Eat UP Your House", "My Mother which A Friend OF at Enemy OF The People", "Hurrah, the butter is all!" or "Confessions OF to airplanes Farter" give an impression of this dialectic. But like already the Dadaismus its nonsense from pure Ernst of the life distilled, digs the project Blurt its energy, in addition, his joke from the chronic Verdrossenheit of their Protagonisten. On the musical side into an adventurous and energetic fusion from Punk and Free jazz flows. The other side is the poetry. It flows either into the Songs of Blurt or however into the books of its author. Ted Milton published some volumes, found it among other things admission into the Bibliotheque national one and the British LIBRARY. Aufbrausend Radical one From the beginning the project Blurt functions as Trio: There is a schlagzeug with bulgy Snare Drum and ruestigem drive. There are a pertinent geschrummelte verkommene Punk guitar and the initially mentioned gesanglichen and saxofonen raids of the Bandleaders. The latters in accordance with-suspect in their blunt Drastik at the earliest to doing a Rahsaan Roland Kirk, but while this revealed occasionally quite also a will for melodioesen arrangement, aims up-brew-sends Saxofonspiel of Ted Milton rather off to underline the Radical in its music. Blurt, that is a general musical state of emergency, music become Ungehaltenheit - and in addition walk yourself Ted Milton his fears and Paranoia from the body. He cries, so that he as a singer am not regarded erroneous, tends Ted Milton his singing style to explain. 26 years is come through it with it, most of his 30 plates, Singles and solo publications are either out of print, or the responsible disk companies stopped their enterprise long. 2003 appeared the urgently due "Best OF Blurt" Compilation "The Fish Needs A Bike". Volume 2 "The Body That They Built ton Fit The Car" presumably in June published and in Switzerland only over import to be available. Whether it is lucky was once asked, Ted Milton in one of its rare interviews, an inquiry, which brought it noticeably in the Gruebeln: "TC, the whole time am not excessively lucky I. I do not expect each day to have a good day from the beginning to the end. I mean to have each day from beginning to the end a nice day who wants to take that up?" No talent for the luck Large luck is more frequently than large talent, a wise philosopher once found out. The circumstance to have no large talent for the large luck benefitted Ted Milton in its art surely. http://www.espace.ch/artikel_213893.html

What about any gigs stateside? I moved here from Stroud and there's a pretty good scene in the big cities on the E. Coast for music and poetry. Iota club and cafe in (Arlington) Washington DC would be a perfect venue.Thomas Iveson, piveson@earthlink.net

And whats this? Being surrounded by a load of men with the kind of beards I can but dream of growing, and the kind of hairlines I dread, is a rare occurrence at this often most youthful of club nights. But when there's a man onstage with an outsize white suit and balding mowhawk (he looks like Brother John Robb gone cabaret entertainer) blasting away at a saxophone, making gargoyle faces and out-staring a banister, you know this isn't the usual White Heat youth band. Nope, this is Blurt, the new wave act fronted by Ted Milton who combined elements of disco, punk and industrial into a heady mix long ignored but, as tonight's performance shows, increasingly relevant to a new generation. The distracted saxophone, edgy guitar, and Milton's vocal exertions are all very Twisted Charm school, taut intelligent and energetic, the kind of dark stuff to keep a the last few denizens of a nightspot moving when everyone is home penetrating or puking. Magnificent stuff and, after a tiring and boozesome fortnight for The Social Worker, just the kind of emission the doctor ordered. http://www.playlouder.com/feature/+the-social-worke-7/

Perhaps most arresting however is Blurt lead singer Ted Milton’s unhinged vocal turn on the saxophone-drenched ‘Pure Scenario’, his erratic vowels and indeed howls reverberating in the finest No Wave tradition over undulating synthetic sub-bass and mournful Middle Eastern strings, the distant sound of sampled crying babies adding a distinctly harrowing undercurrent. While the vocal appearances certainly sit at the forefront of this album, the increasingly lush instrumental backings employed by the duo prove to be equally as potent, with Brain Damage steering things from deep Marrakech dub atmospheres straight through to pulsing electro-techno, without any semblance of putting a foot wrong. An excellent third album from Brain Damage that sits somewhere between the Wordsound label and Bill Laswell / Material’s deep Middle Eastern-tinged dub explorations. http://www.cyclicdefrost.com/blog/?author=36
