Adopting a Humane Society Pet:
How does the adoption process work?
The goal of the Southern Oregon Humane Society is to find permanent,
loving homes for all animals entrusted to our care. We strive to improve
the lives of pets surrendered to us and take our role seriously in
evaluating potential new homes for pets. All pets receive appropriate
vaccinations and veterinary care and are spayed or neutered prior to
being released to go into its new home.
Review the available animals
Read the personality profiles and background information available on
each pet. Pay special attention to how the pet may fit into your lifestyle.
The whole family should be involved in the decision making process, and
it may require several visits to find the right pet. Visit the Society as often
as possible as our pets change daily.

Visit with your chosen prospects
Once you have viewed the animals and have read the personality profiles,
select two or three pets you would like to meet. Spend as much time as
you can to get to know each one. Talk with our adoption counselors to
find out even more about the pets. Check out the ìchemistryî between
your family and its potential new member.
Making the decision
For some, the choice is clear and quickly made. For others it may be
more difficult. Take your time and be sure that this is a pet to whom you
can make a life-time commitment - 10, 15, even 20 years. Do not choose
a pet because you feel sorry for it. Compassion is a factor in caring, but
should not be your sole reason for adopting the pet. And remember, we
are a ìfull adoptionî facility, so each and every animal is guaranteed a
home as long as it remains adoptable.
Complete the paperwork
You will be asked to complete an adoption application. One of our trained
staff or volunteers will review your application with you and ensure that
this is the right match for you and the pet. You must be at least 18 years
old and if you rent, you must bring written proof from your landlord that
you are allowed to have pets on the property. Once your application has
been approved, our staff will generate the adoption papers for you to sign
and collect any adoption and licensing fees due and you and your
companion are on your way home. (The Southern Oregon Humane
Society reserves the right to refuse adoptions.)
Fees
Adoption fees are: $60 for dogs or puppies; $45 for cats or kittens. In all
cases the fees include initial vaccines, worming, flea and tick treatments,
spay or neuter of your adopted pet, and a free healthy pet check at a
participating veterinarian. The Southern Oregon Humane Society makes
every effort to ensure the best health of your new pet, however we cannot
guarantee . . . .
Homeward Bound!
Congratulations! Say so long, but not goodbye. We look forward to
hearing about our alumni and hope that you will return to adopt future
family members. Send pictures, stories and most of all, bring your new pet
back to visit. And thank you for giving the gift of life to a shelter pet.
