The new AmigaOne has finally arrived, but what is it like, what hardware is the new Amiga based around, can it be a true Amiga and dose it have a chance of being the leader of the home computer market once again? Well these are important questions that need to be answered and this page is here to do just that.

Firstly the AmigaOne is not manufactured by Amiga Inc, they have become a software only company, original Amiga gave out the Zico specifications for developers and third party manufacture to follow to building their own AmigaOne system. These new 'Amigas' would then have to be submitted for review to Amiga Inc to get approval for the machine to be allowed to use the Amiga name and licences to run the new AmigaOS. All this was originally intended for the AmigaDE but since then the specs have been adapted for the AmigaOs 4.0, also Eyetech managed to secure a deal to get exclusive rights to use the AmigaOne name on their machines, and in effect have become really the only official new Amiga manufactures. Below how ever is the original specs laid out by Amiga.

The Zico specification for AmigaOne is as follows:

  • PPC Processor (G3,G4,even G5!) (this was any type of CPU as the AmigaDE could run on any, but Os4 is PPC only)
  • 64MB+ memory (DIMM / DDR)
  • AGP / PCI gfx card (Amiga did announce an exclusive deal with Matrox to be the gfx card but I believe this has now fallen through.)
  • Creative EMU10K1 based audio card
  • 10 GB+ HD (IDE / Serial ATA)
  • CD/DVD Rom Drive (IDE)
  • USB 1.0 / 1.1 / 2.0
  • 10/100 Mbps Ethernet
  • 56k modem
  • Spare PCI slots for expendability
  • Price starting from £200 to £1000+

Eyetech originally announced the AmigaOne 1200, that would be a custom build independent motherboard, PPC powered and with the ability to connect to an A1200 and use its custom chips to keep backwards capability. As originally AmigaOS4.0 was only going be around 50% converted to PPC code and feature a 68k emulation to run the rest of the OS. This version of the OS computer would needed Amiga chip sets to work and was mainly aimed at people who had expanded their 68K Amiga with PPC boards..

Since then AmigaOs4.0, under the Hyperion team has now become a complete port and will not require access to Amiga custom chips (like the AGA or Pula chips), so Eyetech changed their plans to build a custom board and are now refitting exiting PPC compatible motherboard, such as the Teron CX, to run AmigaOS 4.

Their are three models of the AmigaOne that Eyetch have introduced, these are the AmigaOne G3 SE, AmigaOne XE, and the AmigaOne Micro.

The AmigaONE G3-SE (no longer available) was designed for developers only and to be as cheap as possible, with a soiled on board G3 clocked at 600Mhz.

The AmigaONE XE has the same features as the G3-SE but offered a CPU connectors. Eyetech are currently (as of the 12/3/04) selling these machine pre-built with either a G3 or G4 processor clocked at 800Mhz!

Finally the AmigaONE Micro that again offers all the features of the XE but is only 17cm X 17cm in size allowing it to be inside off a DVD player case, this is the first real board no being aimed at developers but to customers.

There are other, unofficial AmigaOne system appearing from other companies these included bplans Pegaos/Pegaos 2 and Merlancia Systems which are to be designed around the AmigaMCC/Walker designs.

Finally there is of course the classic Amiga solutions to running Amiga OS 4.0, on Cyberstorm PPC, and other classic PPC solutions. Your most likely also require a PCI card and high end gfx cards to get full enjoyment of the new OS.
