AmigaOS 4.2

This version of AmigaNG web site is out of date, currently working on an update, www.amigang.com due to the fact that Google links this page as the top ranked page for AmigaOS4.2 info I decided to do a small update for this part of the site so that people at lest have an idea of what to expect and where to find more up to date information.

Update: AmigaOS4.2 main new feature will be much improved new graphics software Gallium3D and improved OpenGl performance and support. Along with this it should also finally have full USB2.0 support and various other improved performances and fixs. Its other key goal is to support AmigaONE X1000 hardware and possibly Xmos support. Features are:

  • Provide a hardware-accelerated OpenGL for applications, games, and the operating system.
  • Provide a driver interface with maximum flexibility. We do not want to count exclusively on Gallium3D as a basis for drivers, although it will be a fundamental one.
  • Provide a low-level API that does not depend on high-level constructs like Windows or Screens. While it should be possible to render to these, it should not depend on any of them.
  • Support multi-threading and multiple CPU's.
  • Shell new interface and commands.
  • USB 2.0 Fully Supported, New Devices and features supported.
  • Improved performance and various fixs.
  • AmigaONE X1000 nemo Support
  • Possible Xmos/Xena Support

Keep upto date with latest AmigaOS developments on the Blog http://blog.hyperion-entertainment.biz/

Below information is Taken from Amiga Technical update 2002, and now is pritty much out of date, but kept online for a matter of record.

AmigaOS4.2 will build upon the foundation of AmigaOS4. It is designed to :

  • Integrate the Amiga Digital Environment (AmigaDE) into the AmigaOS
  • make OS4 fully device retargetable, allowing all applications to be able to operate without the need for physically attached older Amiga hardware
  • Open up access to the new hardware features offered by the zico hardware specification
  • Convert, re-implement and enhance more of the AmigaOS4.0 68k code to PPC

The feature set for AmigaOS4.2 includes;

  • AmigaDE integration
    • AmigaDE hosted directly in the AmigaOS
    • Full access to all content experience and development
    • Personal Java
    • SHEEP scripting language
  • Audio System - PPC native
    • Retargetable Audio system (RTA)
    • AHI/CAMD drivers for EMU10K1 PCI cards
    • Multiple Audio Contexts
    • Advanced MIDI support
  • USB - PPC native
    • USB2.0 OHCP stack
    • System device drivers - mouse, keyboard, hub
  • Amiga Device retargeting - PPC native
    • Amiga.devices re-implemented as retargetable, removing the requirement for old Amiga hardware to be present
  • Further conversion of 68k code to native PPC - this will be done by order of contribution to execution performance, to give developers and users the most improvement.

OS 4.2 will finally let Amiga build an Amiga with out any classic hardware.  It will also be a much bigger jump than OS4.0 mainly because of the introduction of the Amiga DE. This will give all A1 owners a huge amount of new software though the device that has been designed for the DE and software made for JAVA. Once this version is out we can also expect to see a number of new AmigaOne`s and AmigaOnes clones.
