AmigaNG has got a new home at www.amigang.com , but dont worry this site will remain online for the time being even if most of the information is out of date and the pictures dont work, but i still like the design and remember all my hard work that when into it, so I hope someone finds some intresting stuff in it, but for a more uptodate site, visit www.amigang.com , NOTE: you will need a modern web brower and for the time being a Flash Player for the site. Thanks Welcome to the future... If your a first time visitors, this site is dedicated to covering all the information on the next generation of Amiga`s. With the arrival of the AmigaOne, Amiga OS 4.0 and Amiga DE/Anywhere, the future of Amiga has never looked healthier. All these products need a web site to report on them, and this is just one of them. AmigaNG started way back in Feb 1999 to cover news on the Amiga MCC (later cancelled), it is now one of the longest running next generation site. Its not official and is not sponsor, but is still one of the best place for your source of next generation information of Amiga computing. Enjoy the site. TEN YEARS ON......Its hard to believe ten years has passed since I started what was my first ever web site. I was 16 looking forward to the new AmigaMCC from gateway, ever since then I have been waiting, waiting and waiting for a new computer and OS to come along that was as fun, easy, and fast as the Amiga was. Its such a shame that the Amiga never got the right owners, Commodore didn't really see it as a competitor to the pc or mac markets but more of just a basic home computer, Escom might of done alright, if they did'nt fall under so quickly, with things like the Amiga surf pack being shown at CES96 being the cheapest machine to get on the internet and many people who visited the stand thought it was a PC powered system. The Amiga Walker looked like a good next step, it would of been difficult to keep up however with out 3d graphics being added to the Amiga very quickly. Then Gateway bought it, it still a bit unclear why they did buy it, its believed that just because Dell took an interest, Gateway (who at this time was rapidly taking over Dells PC market) decided to grab it quick, the official line is they bought it mainly for Amiga patents, which they still jointly own with the current owners. For the first year Gateway did pretty much nothing with the Amiga, but then for what ever reason Jim Collins saw an opportunity with the Amiga and decided to try and make a new machine and OS under the Amiga name, but its believed pressure from Microsoft stop development of these project, this was right when interest in the new Amiga started to appear out side the amiga community/world and was being reported in big IT magazines and papers that a popular 80's machine may be making a come back with one of the biggest PC manufacturers behind it, Micosoft got worried and threaten Gateway with losing the right to sell Windows on there machines. So Amiga was yet again in limbo but a private company named Amino/Kmos got it, with Bill McEwen at the helm, it looked promising with the idea being having the OS on any device but application would only have to be written once for the OS, it was like a advance version of JAVA, but based on Tao Elite OS, called AmigaDE then Amiga Anywhere, but so far Amiga is any thing but Anywhere. During this time Hyperion and Eyetech decided to approach Amiga with the idea of continuing development the AmigaOS on to the PPC platform, PPC hardware had been around on the Amiga since 97, but never really took off due to lack of support from Amiga Inc. Hyperion developed AmigaOS 4.0 and Eyetech developed the AmigaONE systems, the problem was porting the OS to completely new hardware was going to take time and Eyetech launched the hardware before the software so there was little uptake on the hardware and by the time software support was coming the hardware was not, Eyetech pulled out of the Amiga market. During this time a lot of the last companies and software developers for Amiga left, the last major Amiga magazine in the shops ended, and this is where I kind of moved on from the Amiga. 2005 was the year when I last really followed the Amiga scene and used my home Amiga on a daily bases, but the dream was still there, and Amiga seem to making a slight come back now with AmigaOS 4.1 out, also available on new hardware by Acube, sam440ep, software is improving all the time and it might have a bit of a revival if they can get it on to more hardware and sort out the court case (Amiga and Hyperion have been locked in a court case for the last 2 years on rights to the OS. Its a shame but for what ever reason Amiga Inc don't seem to want Hyperion to develop it any further and what the OS source code and ownership back, but Hyperion after all there work don't quite see it like that). So its 2009 ten years on from when we where promised a new Amiga, its been quite a ride and its not over yet who knows where the Amiga will be in another 10 years time but its defied the odds lasting this long, its still somehow going and I will still hope for that day I can walk into a shop and ask "can I buy the new Amiga please". www.amigang.com Vincent Perkins - Webmaster of AmigaNG 1999 to 2009 Site started on: Feb 1st 1999 |
