Software Development Kit or SDK

At last there is something new to talk about, and that is the new development OS. However what the SDK or the Dev Box will have running, will be nothing like the final customer environment, it is in fact just Tao's Elate running on top of other OS. Version v1.0 can be run on Linux, and Version v1.1 can run on Windows, this shows how the new OS will be able to run on almost anything, and keep the speed and compatibility. The true update to the SDK (v1.2) will finally have some big improvements, and will no longer just be Tao`s Elate, but will have software done by Amiga and other companies on there. In fact Amiga have announced that ACT, Amiga Development, Corel, Crystal Software, DCE, Digital Images, Epic, Espial, H&P, Hyperion, JVC, Met@box, Red Hat, Scala, Sun Micro Systems, Titan, Sharp, and Tvision are all developing for the SDK. They claim that there are around 100 apps in the works (being ported or developed) from these companies all for the new Amiga DE. A list of some of the commercial games/apps are on this link. The Amiga SDK v1.2 will have improvements in sound, graphics and better developing tools, this version will be much closer to the AmigaDE. I think the SDK v1.0 is just a basic starter, not made for making much more than very small programs, and gives developer a introduce to virtual coding. I'm hoping that V1.2 will be out very soon, and then we can really start to see some big programs and software being made. The first AmigaDe should of be out by late July, and then people will be able to program on that, so will be no need for more SDK`s. But we will have to wait and see, what happens. Below is some pictures of the box and software you get when buying a SDK!

Nice design boxes but what do you get and how much is it, but more importantly what will it run on?

Amazon said this as to what's included " Amiga Foundation Layer, development tools for C, pJava and the amazing VP, hundreds of pages of documentation and much more "

Well the requirements for the SDK are beginning to vary, as Amiga make it more and more less hardware dependent, it will soon be able to run on an extra 4 different OS they included QNX, OS 9, BeOS etc, but here are the specs for when it was first realise:

Version 1.0

PC with 2X AGP running an AMD K6-2 500mhz, any K6-III or Athlon or INTEL, Pentium II 300mhz or faster

128mb ram or higher

10 Gig hard drive or higher

Sounblaster 16 bit compatible audio card (recommended Soundblaster 128)

Matrox AGP G400 Dual Head Video Card 16mb or 32mb(this model will be 100% supported in future releases of SDK, although any Linux supported AGP Graphics card will work in the intial release, and its thought that the new Matrox G450 or G800 could be the graphics card in AmigaOne, more soon)

100 base T ethernet board PCI (recommended LinkSys LNE 100TX)

VGA Monitor

Red Hat Linux 6.1 installed

Price $99.99 (around £80)

Version 1.1

Same as above

But Can run on Windows 95+

And a number of other processors.

Price: $120 (around £100)

Version 1.2

Should have new Sound and 3D Graphics support.

This is due out soon, will more and likely only available to people who have bought the SDK already.

Version 1.3 ??

Its likely this version wont come out as the Amiga De "should" be out and "should" let programmers/developer make there games on that. Always remember Amiga Inc saying though" if you haven't heard it from us then it must be false".

Amiga DE

When this finally comes out it will take over from the SDK and programmers/developer will be able to develper on this instead. Click here for more information on the DE.

You can buy Amiga SDK from all good stock-age! Their are also a number of reviews and add on`s that has come out, so I would highly recommend going to the unofficial Amiga SDK web page. This has a number of downloads, for use with SDK and it also has more detail information on the SDK, pulse its more up to date, than this site. You can expect a small update to this site when version 1.2 come outs.
